The Albert McMahon Memorial Award

This award goes to the student team that demonstrates the greatest degree of involvement from the various areas in their school and community in the design, construction and operation of their vehicle.

Albert McMahon (M.A., M.Ed) was an educator who taught in the Ottawa Board of Education schools for 18 years beginning in 1959 until his death in 1978. He was on the staff at several Ottawa secondary schools including Ottawa Technical, Sir Wilfred Laurier, Highland Park, McArthur and Ridgemont. Coming from an academic background, he was noted for championing technical education in Ottawa high schools and encouraging co-operation between technical and academic disciplines within the educational environment. He promoted short-term work placement opportunities for students with local businesses as part of their curriculum.

This award includes a tropy and a $200 purse. Only student teams are eligible for this award, at any age level, whether officially sponsored by a school or not. They do not necessarily have to be registered in the HSEC. The award is sponsored by Econogics,Inc.

This award may be of particular interest to the staff and students of Ridgemont High School (Ottawa Board of Education), which also presents an annual award in memory of Albert McMahon.

The winner of this award, in both 1998 and 1999, was Arnprior District High School.

IEE Prize for the Best Notebook

In the tradition of Michael Faraday, founder of modern electrical engineering and who kept immaculate notebooks of all his work, the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) is offering a prize of $200 for the school team with the best kept notebook. The notebook should show the development of the ideas for the vehicle, should record the experiments which are carried out to test critical ideas, and give a comprehensive picture of how the team resolved critical aspects of design.

The notebooks for teams entering for the prize will be assessed on the day of the race by a small panel of engineers, and the prize will be presented at the end of the race by a senior member of the IEE. All notebooks shall be returned to the team members.

The prize consists of $200 and a certificate.
