Products: ADSORBIT Filter Fabric

Do you need to remove oil or hydrocarbons from pump-outs like electrical vaults or bilges, but let water pass through? Stop oil from leaching out from contaminated areas into waterways due to run-off? Prevent oil leaks from reaching beyond a containment zone even when rain, snow and ice are factors?

ADSORBIT is a filter fabric which allows water to filter through, but traps hydrocarbons within its fibres and physically prevents particulates from passing through. Made from recycled plastic, this product can be wrung out to recover captured oil or refined hydrocarbons and re-used many times. After a spill event is concluded, the fabric can be laundered, dried and stored for subsequent re-use. At end of life, it can be recycled. ADSORBIT is available in a wide range of form factors and value-add configurations.

This is a low-cost and very effective approach to oil spill containment, control and capture.

  • re-usable, dozens of times, so it reduces your overall costs over multiple spill recovery events
  • separates oil from water, so you don't have to store, settle and decant
  • oil and other hydrocarbons can be RECOVERED mechanically by squeezing the fabric
  • no toxic waste is created (as is the case with absorbents)

    This product should be in the tool kit of any first responders dealing with gasoline, diesel oil, heating fuel, crude oil or pipeline spills.

    Other Applications

    We have used ADSORBIT as a primary rainwater filter to remove particulate matter and clarify the water, and been delighted by the result. Filters have been in use for over 10 years now, washed once a year at start of collection season.

    We have used the ADSORBIT filter sock at the drain outlet of our washing machine to collect microfibres which are released from clothes in the wash and rinse cycles. The amount collected (after drying) is comparable to the mass collected by the lint trap in the clothes dryer. The latter typically goes into solid waste disposal, but without the filter sock, that volume would go into the wastewater system or septic field.

    RESTCo tested the filter fabric to capture microplastics down to sub-10-micron size, and the results can be seen here.

    RESTCo demonstrated the ADSORBIT filter fabric can be used with our Gravity Skimmer to filter algal bloom, microplastics and other floating pollution before returning the water back into the river or lake being cleaned.

    We have demonstrated the filter fabric will collect particles smaller than 10 microns, and can be used in shoreline clean-up activities to capture microplastics, not just large pieces.
